The winner of the very first ‘Indie’ Award for ‘Best Australian Book’ is Breath by Tim Winton. He receives $19,000, donated by over 120 independent booksellers.

The Australian Independent Booksellers awards are also given out to Debut Fiction – this year won by Toni Jordan with her book Addition, non-fiction to Don Watson’s American Journeys and Children’s Book award going to Shaun Tan for Tales from Outer Suburbia. Leading Edge Books manages the ‘Indie’ award.

Winton acknowledged independent booksellers in his acceptance speech: "People don’t always realise that independent bookselling has become endangered elsewhere in the English-speaking world while here at home independents are a significant slice of the trade. Faced, as we are, with yet another blundering assault on the book industry, it’s worth remembering that a vibrant book culture has flowered here despite immense geographical, logistical and historical challenges,"
