In a recent post, literary agent and blogger Miss Snark responded to a question about manuscripts with topics that agents automatically refuse to represent. The topic in question was the death of a child, and referred to Lionel Shriver’s We Need To Talk About Kevin, which her agents refused to represent but went on to win the Orange Prize.

Miss Snark says that there are some common topics that agents won’t touch, including child death, paedophilia, sexual abuse and torture, and that good writing might not be enough to garner representation for a manuscript on these topics. However, every agent’s list of no-nos is different, so Miss Snark says keep trying until you hit the right one.
